Today’s activity Idea is Orienteering for Kids. Where we live there is an extensive activities of Foot orienteering. Alongside traditional orienteering, The organizers are insist to add also Orienteering Activities to the small childrens, they call it “Chicks Orienteering“.
The idea is simple, The organizers spread in small area (2 acres) drawings of 6 animals or other pictures, and attached to them marker pen. Every child receives Control Card with small drawings of the animals. The goal of the children is to find the animal drawings and to use the marker to mark the animal in the card. Once they find all the drawings they return to the organizers who give them a balloon. It is very simple kids activities, the kids love it and you can copy the idea for other events like birthday parties etc.
I want to tell you more about my experience with orienteering activities for my kids. As parents we always want the best for our children it doesn’t matter what activities they do as long as we see them enjoying. But the best price we parents would glad to see with our children is their “learning” out from the activities they involve with. Apart of it is our concern to make sure that our children are safe and will gather mind full thoughts after the activities. That is why I became interested with orienteering sports for my kids to experience.
At first I was hesitant in this kind of sport for my kids; I don’t have enough idea to foresee the benefits I can have orienteering activities. My advance negative thoughts clings me, but hearing positive testimonies and reaction from parents I became more interested to it. I asked questions to other parents, but still confuse yet interested with the whole procedure of the orienteering activities. I’m a techy parent so I never doubt to “consult” my internet. Surprisingly, I find an orienteering handbook at the internet telling discussing about the whole meaning, procedure and benefits of the orienteering sports and bought it and another book about orienteering that I find.
I tried to applied the information that I got from the 2 handbooks about orienteering sports. My children really enjoyed it and me as well. They really had a great time while doing their tasks to accomplish. What I appreciate most is their learning’s; Now, they already know how to read maps, compass, follow directions and many more. As a proud parent, I am more convinced to expose my children from these kinds of outdoor activities. I’m so glad these two material handbooks have provided me with so more activities for my children.
The materials are not only for ordinary activities days, Like I wrote before, even with occasions like birthday party, I could apply these activities ideas using the handbooks. My questions on how to start orienteering sports were answered and provided clearly. The procedures were given in an understandable order. All were explained well and each chapter explains the whole procedure. These two materials I found Teaching Orienteering and Orienteering Made Simple Instructional Handbook were made not only for children but also for adults.
I should say that all of us in our family now like this orienteering activities and it strengthens our family bonding but the most important value of having this activities material is my children’s lifelong learning acquisition.
